Ana Marie Santos and Cherife Pulliam, teachers at the Mansfield Head Start and Child Development Center in Fort Worth, Texas, created a house for the Letter People hand puppets in the Dramatic Play Home Center. They cut a house outline, added a roof and windows, attached two inexpensive plastic shoe organizers, and taped the house to a wall. The puppets fit in the shoe organizers and are readily accessible to the children. Since using the Letter People House, Mrs. Santos reports that all of her 3-year-olds know the letter of their first name and many other letters. Center Director, Brenda Valenzuela, recently checked the 3.6-year-old in-class assessment results and was amazed by how many letters the children were able to identify!

Dear Alison,

I have purchased Let’s Begin with the Letter People® for all of our Head Start programs. They love the program and have been using it for many years. What research do you have that demonstrates that Let’s Begin is a scientifically based program? Can you help me?

Thank you,

Barbara Gerber
Education Coordinator/Head Start
Bluffton, Indiana

Dear Barbara,
It’s wonderful to hear that the Letter People have helped so many children in your Head Start classes! Let’s Begin with the Letter People is based on the most respected and current early childhood research practices, has been used for the annual collection of pre/post efficacy assessment data, and has also been embedded in several third-party medical-model research projects. Two research booklets, Abrams & Company Publishers: Research Foundations for the Letter People Programs and The Sequence of Speech-Sound Acquisition in the Letter People Programs are available from Customer Service or at our Web site.

Three correlations, specific to Head Start, are also available: Let’s Begin with the Letter People in Support of the Standards and NHSA Key Recommendations for Head Start, Let’s Begin with the Letter People Supports the New Quality Standards for the Head Start Act, and Correlation of Let’s Begin with the Letter People to Head Start Child Outcomes Framework.

All the best,
Alison
